Il volume raccoglie profili di storici di generazioni diverse, che con spirito diverso hanno operato nel Mezzogiorno, senza però costituire una scuola o un filone unitario di studi: storiografia nel Mezzogiorno, quindi, piuttosto che una storiografia meridionale. L'autore evoca, con partecipazione quasi affettiva, momenti della sua esperienza di docente universitario nell'ateneo federiciano, e figure che per lui sono state importanti non solo per contiguità scientifica o accademica. Nel testo è contenuto anche un lungo saggio sulla Bartolomeo Capasso, figura rilevante nel quadro della storiografia napoletana dell'Ottocento.
