صدر كتاب (دمعة وابتسامة) لجبران عام 1914، وقد ضمّ عدداً من النصوص التي كتبها بين عامي 1903 و1908 ونشرها في جريدة (المهاجر). ومما لاشكَّ فيه أنه كان لهذه النصوص أكبر الأثر في لفت أنظار القرّاء والأدباء العرب على السواء،إلى موهبة جبران وصوته الفريد الذي فتح للكتابة العربية آفاقاً جديدة تعيد إليها حيويتها بعد أن كانت تنوء تحت وطأة الصيغ والأنماط التقليدية.
