Die Erfassung solcher Abhängigkeiten durch eine einzige Maßzahl wird Korrelationskoeffizient genannt. Da eine Nominalskala keine Ordnungsstruktur aufweist, ist das zugehörige Zusammenhangsmaß, der Kontingenzkoeffizient, natürlich nur in der Lage, die Stärke des Zusammenhangs zu erfassen. Demgegenüber messen der Bravais-Pearson-Korrelationskoeffizient und der Rangkorrelationskoeffizienten sowohl die Stärke als auch die Richtung des Zusammenhangs.
