John & Stasi Eldredge are well-known authors to me and my friends, but their latest book entitled Love & War caught my attention for a different reason.
I’ve been married now for a couple years and haven’t read hardly anything on the subject since premarital counseling. I don’t think that’s a particularly unusual place to be, but as a person who values not just where my relationship has been, but what it is becoming I felt compelled to give this book a whirl.
Their early statement that “Marriage is fabulously hard” caught my attention. Based on the struggles and the joys I’ve had so far, I knew that John and Stasi understood where I was coming from. They have been married for ten times as many years as I have. Heck, they even wrote a book together, which I’m sure breeds tension like trying to put together a playground set sans directions.
The book is filled with engaging stories and biblical passages to help illustrate their points about marriage, the most notable of which was the insight that my marriage has enemies, and that doesn’t mean my spouse! Also, the last chapter on “Learning to Love” is a must read for married couples or those aspiring to a married relationship. In it, they leave the reader with the best and most effective weapons to help survive the warlike elements of a marriage.
The statistics are widely known. The chances are sadly against having a happy marriage, however, there are couples out there that are able to create something truly beautiful. Their story is not everybody’s story, but John and Stasi to a solid job of helping others to find their own way to love.
"I received this book for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review."
