This would have been a great story if it had been done by a better writer/story teller. For most of the book, the author seemed to be focused on just filling pages, much like a student required to fill a certain number of pages for a report/essay. A whole lot of useless words and filler which served to not only distract from the story, but to almost bury it.

I read the experiance of valad the Impaler in my recent journey on my travels too & from the United states. Ms. Elizabeth Kostova on way to accepting Valad being alive' if not the Rasputin being a vampire? questionable also the thought about him being an elder is like wow never to been found making a name in honor of being the longest living creature if successful & suffering from the thirst of hunger.. I would want to been a vampire"!" to live too feel nothing to fight or died wanting the experienced of blood war moon soon too come

Beautiful and Terrifying!! This book has stuck in my mind from the first read years ago. It can be slow at first for some readers but I enjoyed the build up. It's highly detailed and takes you on a frightening journey. So realistic at times I feel I was there with the characters. One of the best Gothic Vampire novels ever written.

Elizabeth Kostova is the author of the international bestseller The Historian. She graduated from Yale and holds an MFA from the University of Michigan, where she won the Hopwood Award for the Novel-in-Progress.
