I've been using this book in conjunction with 1st Steps for a Beginning Guitarist. Basically this book gives you about 16 pages of theory information and then 100 pages of exercises. I was first put off by the book I thought it would be 100 pages of theory information. I contacted the author (yes you can actually contact the author with questions, how often does that happen) and he explained it like this: "If you were to take a music theory course in school you would find that they give you a certain amount of information and then a ton of exercises to engrain that information. Here is an example. If I teach you that a major chord is build with 4 half steps and then 3 half steps that's great but you need to know that in all keys. Therefore you need exercises to get this information memorized. Think of music theory like a language. You learn a new word but then you need to use that word in many contexts in order to know how to use it and to get it memorized." So I took the doctors advice and have been doing one page of exercises a week. I have to say it's not my favorite book but after even a few pages I noticed that I was understanding a lot more about music and how chords are put together. It is also helping me see the guitar neck in a deeper way. I would say this is an excellent book for a student that really wants to learn music. If you just want to strum a few chords and not have a clue about what you are doing then stay away.
