સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદનાં જીવનચરિત્રો તો ઘણી ભાષાઓમાં પહેલેથી લખાતાં તો આવ્યાં જ છે પણ જેમ જેમ સમય જતો ગયો, તેમ તેમ તેમના જીવન સંબંધી નવાં અને નવાં અનેક તથ્યો, જીવનની અનેક ઘટનાઓ, તેમની અમુક લાક્ષણિકતાઓ, તેમનાં વક્તવ્યો - વગેરે બધું બહાર આવવા લાગ્યું અને તેથી એ પહેલાં લખાયેલાં જીવનચરિત્રોમાં અધુરપ આવી. સ્વામીજી બ્રહ્મલીન થયા પછી થોડાંક જ વર્ષોમાં માયાવતીના અદ્વૈત આશ્રમમાંથી ‘Life of Swami Vivekananda by His Eastern and Western Disciples’ નામે એક પ્રામાણિક જીવનચરિત્ર ચાર ખંડોમાં પ્રકાશિત થયું હતું. એના પછી સ્વામીજીના જીવનને વધુ પ્રામાણિક રીતે રજૂ કરવાના ઉદ્દેશથી ઉદ્બોધન કાર્યાલયમાંથી પ્રમથનાથ બસુએ ‘સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદ’ નામનું પુસ્તક બે ખંડોમાં પ્રકાશિત કર્યું. આ બે ગ્રંથોમાં પણ પહેલું અદ્વૈતાશ્રમવાળું પુસ્તક વધુ વ્યાપક રીતે વખાણાયું છે.
