Her UNICEF assignment engaged her in poverty alleviation work, specifically maternal and child health, girl's education, income-generating for poor rural women, safe drinking water, sanitation, and iodine eradication, in China's ten outlaying provinces (Xinjiang, Tibet, Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Honan, Shaanxi, Anhui, Qinghai, and Gansu), as well as in Mongolia. While the scientific side of her research has been published in various professional journals, the author now recounts her experiences in narrative form.

About the author
Katherine Ch'iu Hinton is trained in epidemiology and has researched in China with the U.S. Academy of Sciences, represented the Rockefeller Foundation in China to manage its programs in health, agriculture, and population, in addition to carrying out clinical trials, worked on HIV prevention in Kenya, and served with UNICEF to aid poverty alleviation in China and Mongolia. Hinton is the author of scientific articles as well as Chinese Fables, China's Resources: Mountains, Rivers, and Man, and International Family Planning Program.
