Pp. 5-23 discuss philosemitism expressed in Mann's non-fictional writings, including appreciation of the Jewish role in civilization, pro-Zionism, and anti-Nazism. The rest of the book deals with Mann's novels, in particular "Buddenbrooks", "Wälsungenblut", "Der Zauberberg", and "Doktor Faustus". These novels include Jewish characters who are nihilistic or diabolical, and embody traditional Christian or modern antisemitic stereotypes. Attributes this contradiction to a split between the author's rational and emotional selves. The former expressed appreciation of the Jews; the latter projected onto them all that was negative in the culture of an epoch or in human nature.
