About this ebook

"English is so illogical!"

It is generally believed that English is a language of exceptions. For many, learning to spell and read is frustrating. For some, it is impossible... especially for the 29% of Americans who are functionally illiterate.

But what if the problem is not the language itself, but the rules we were taught? What if we could see the complexity of English as a powerful tool rather than a hindrance? --Denise Eide

Uncovering the Logic of English challenges the notion that English is illogical by systematically explaining English spelling and answering questions like "Why is there a silent final E in have, large, and house?" and "Why is discussion spelled with -sion rather than -tion?" With easy-to-read examples and anecdotes, this book describes:

- the phonograms and spelling rules which explain 98% of English words

- how English words are formed and how this knowledge can revolutionize vocabulary development

- how understanding the reasons behind English spelling prevents students from needing to guess

The author's inspiring commentary makes a compelling case that understanding the logic of English could transform literacy education and help solve America's literacy crisis. Thorough and filled with the latest linguistic and reading research, Uncovering the Logic of English demonstrates why this systematic approach should be as foundational to our education as 1+1=2.

This book and the accompanying curriculum present a linear, logical approach to teaching spelling and reading. As an English teacher of highly logical thinkers (students with autism and Asperger's), I have frequently been frustrated by the illogical nature of English, and my students have been absolutely stymied. I am excited (after 10 years of teaching English, a Bachelor's degree, and a Master's degree) to finally be able to give my students reasons why words are spelled and pronounced they way they are. This book presents logical rules that empower not only teachers and students, but everyone who has ever struggled with reading. Even those who find that reading comes naturally to them can benefit from knowing these rules. The most amazing part is that the widespread knowledge of these rules could eliminate illiteracy and the economic hardship it brings to both the people who suffer from it and the economy as a whole. Teaching the Logic of English would end illiteracy and the dependence on the system that this lack of comprehension brings. Reading instruction has somehow become a politically polarized issue. However, the non-partisan logic of this book is something that Republicans, Independents, and Democrats alike can rally around. This book brings the promise of literacy for all people which means better employees, more successful businesses, and a stronger economy on a national level. No matter your party, everyone can appreciate the societal benefits of that!

FINALLY! After years of searching, I have found a phonics book that provides the best of what is needed to understand and teach phonics. Denise Eide presents a clear explanation of quality literacy instruction and supports it with extensive useful examples. Eide's book will be required reading for the future teachers in my explicit phonics class. Daniel B. Coupland, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Education Hillsdale College

There are a few errors in this book but if you can over look that, the information is enlightening!
