PERTENGAHAN abad ke-14 M, Ibnu Baththuthah, penjelajah terkenal asal Maghrib (Maroko), mengunjungi kota kesultanan Samudra Pasai yang disebutnya dengan Sumuthrah kemudian ia mencatat dalam laporannya: “Sumuthrah adalah sebuah kota besar dan indah, dikelilingi benteng dan menara-menara terbuat dari kayu.”
Kota yang dimaksud Ibnu Baththuthah itu adalah kawasan inti tinggalan sejarah Samudra Pasai yang berada di Kecamatan Samudera, Kabupaten Aceh Utara, hari ini.
