René Thom n'accepte pas les modèles cognitifs qui sont le prolongement de la logique formelle moderne et un domaine propice à la quantification. Thom se désintéresse de l'analyse dite compartimentale. Sa pensée modélisatrice est manifestement différente de celle de Legay. L'exemple recommandé du " modélisme physique " se trouve chez Bohr. Il s'agit de cette manière de modéliser qui, tout en s'attachant à l'abstraction, notamment mathématique, pense le réel comme il se doit.
