Probably the biggest surprise of 2014, 'Coherence' may not have a large - or even mid-size - budget, but it succeeds because of its well-drawn characters and a storyline that gives even the best 'Twilight Zone' episodes a run for their money. Emily Foxler stars as Em, a woman who attends a dinner party and begins experiencing, along with her boyfriend and their six friends, a mind-bending loop of multiple personalities. Initially believed to be the supernatural result of a passing comet, the mysterious loop is actually - well, I won't ruin the fun. As quiet and somber as 'Coherence' is, it is nothing but fun from start to finish. It's more about how and why these characters escape than it is a question of whether or not they will.

The whole thing is improvised (outside of major plot points) by the actors and the weird (often creepy) story line and subsequent mystery is magnet and intelligent and fun as hell. This just became my second favorite movie of the year. Pure bliss - I should have just purchased it rather than renting. You're going to want to watch this a second and third time.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. All the people who like this movie demonstrate their stupidity by suggesting that it's good. Characters overreacted to small stuff and underreact to huge stuff. There's actually a scene where a guy suggests that he should go and murder some people and nobody seems to be bothered by that. "My brother is a physicist he said not to go outside when there's a comet outside because it will create quantum entanglement paradoxes derrrrrrrrrrr".
