Mercenary Curtie Church (Djimon Hounsou, Blood Diamond) is hired to take out a notorious Thai sex-trafficking gang by a father whose daughter was kidnapped and murdered by the gang. With the help of a ruthless weapons dealer (Kevin Bacon, Mystic River), Church finds the men he is hired to kill. But what starts as a paying job turns into an outright war between two rival gangs, and Church finds himself caught between the corrupt world that surrounds him and the truth behind the man who hired him.

MPAA Rating: R Rated R for strong violence, language, sexual content, some nudity and drug material.

It has been some years since I first watched this and now I find myself renting it again out of sheer appreciation and nostalgia. Djimon Hounsou in one of his only leading roles is unforgettable as mercenary Curtie Church, and Kevin Bacon adds his inevitable supporting spice as a weapons dealer with a shared history. But all of the top-notch acting takes the back seat, in my opinion, to the ride the plot takes the viewer on. The cinematography is often poignant, and the twists kept my interest throughout. A very emotionally-stirring slice about a rather taboo (though more and more often depicted) topic that is a very dark reality we can only hope is being stamped out of existence. This film is highly underrated and one of my personal favs.
