Toby (Chris Pine) and Tanner (Ben Foster) are brothers who come together to rob branch after branch of the bank that is foreclosing on their family land. Vengeance seems to be theirs until they find themselves in the crosshairs of a relentless, foul-mouthed Ranger (Jeff Bridges) looking for one last triumph on the eve of his retirement.

While at times a bit of a slow burn the performance put on by this cast more than makes up for any downtime in the action or drama. With Jeff Bridges, Ben Foster, and Chris Pine as your leads it'd be difficult to mess up and they definitely didn't here. Highly recommended to anyone looking for something more akin to a classic western than you are likely to see these days. A throwback of sorts, but in all the right ways. As a person who doesn't particularly enjoy country music I was somewhat surprised to find myself loving the soundtrack to the film as well. Just an all-in-all great film that slipped under the radar (my radar at least) until it came available for rental.

Just shows how bad the movie business has been that an average bank robbery movie can get rave reviews to bring it to a 98% rating. Some of the greatest acclaimed movies of all time barely break 90.

this movie is a Western. make no mistake. it's a slow one but it is indeed. good to great performances all around. Ben Foster is a stand out as usual. there is no way the resolution would ever work which is why only 4 out of 5.
