I guess if you're going to make a movie with a ridiculous premise and silly theme, you ought to make the best darn movie you can. And that's exactly what director Luc Besson did with "Lucy." Basically, he took a drug/transcendence movie from the 70s (perhaps an inverse of Altered States (1980)), pumped up the special effects and action, used good actors/acting and made a pretty darn good movie. Heck, he's even got some nice visual metaphors and witticisms going in the thing. So, I'm rating the movie at a Pretty Good, highly enjoyable 4 stars out of 5 (I'd actually like to rate it at 3-1/2 stars, but fractions aren't allowed). Aside: It's interesting to compare the "use more of our brain" theme here with how James Alan Gardner treats it in his "Ascending" book (5th book in his "League of Peoples" series which starts with "Expendable". In this movie, using all the interconnections in our brain makes a smarter, more intelligent, godlike being. In Gardner's book, the fact that those interconnections didn't get pruned or deactivated as the brain matured makes a smarter being incapable of focusing.

It's not a bad movie. People Just dig into it way to much. It's got somewhat above-average action scenes, and a out there sense of logic. It's somewhat unique (I say somewhat because there is bound to be something oddly simialar.) I find the fact that one individual (or group of) feel like the have the right to moan and complain about a a good because A) It doesn't meet their standards Or B) They dug into it way to much and they ruined it by forcing their logic into where it doesn't belong. The same group of people also like to knit pick about some of the science in the movie. The science in Spider Man never made sense, but it was still a above-average movie. The same goes to Hulk Franchise Wolverine Etc. Bottom Line Movie = Entertainment Entertainment =/= Pissy fan base

The trailers for this movie make it look like some kind of action movie, but it's one of those slow-paced thoughtful movies that introduces unnecessary story elements for the purpose of jamming in more symbols to further the director's discussion of deeper ideas. In other words, the trailer makes it look like Star Wars, but it's really more Star Trek. As has been discussed elsewhere, the movie hinges on that tired old "use 100% of your brain" trope, and the world of sci-fi really needs to stop using that silly idea. Despite that, it is nice to see a sci-fi movie in which science is presented as a positive force instead of a source of evil, and the movie does have some interesting things to say about knowledge, society, morality, etc.
