Indu (Shabana Azmi) and DK (Naseeruddin Shah) live a peaceful, prosperous life with their two affectionate daughters. One day, DK receives a word that he has an illegitimate son born from a brief fling he had with a woman, who is now dead. The nine-year-old boy, Rahul (Jugal Hansraj) needs a home. Despite Indu's objections, who is devastated to learn of her husband's infidelity, DK brings Rahul home. While Rahul tries to find a place in the new home, Indu is caught in a dilemma. She can neither be hostile toward the innocent naïve child nor can she bear to look at the tangible reminder of her husband's infidelity. The film gracefully captures the nuanced intricacies and fragility of human relationships.
