Middle-aged Louise (Simone Signoret) has spent her life looking after her disabled brother, Gilles (Jean Rochefort). Their only regular visitor is baker Yvette (Delphine Seyrig). Lonely and seeking romantic companionship, Louise places a personal ad in the newspaper. Unfortunately, the only response comes from her brother, but Louise decides to continue the correspondence as "Beatrice." Their letters grow increasingly devoted and romantic -- until Gilles asks to meet his pen pal.
