SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS follows four children who dream of escaping from the tedium of a summer holiday. When finally given permission to camp on their own on a remote island in the middle of a vast lake, they are overjoyed. But when they arrive, they discover they may not be alone and a desperate yet whimsical battle for ownership of the island ensues, where both skill and luck play a hand. Simultaneously, the dangers of an adult world, on the brink of war, encroach on their paradise and intertwine with their lives, in the form of a mysterious pair of Russian spies hot on the tail of the enigmatic Jim Turner. The children must ban together from both groups, learn skills of survival, responsibility, and the all-important value of friendship to save a family member. Steeped in the wonder of a child’s imagination and set against a breath-taking backdrop, this is an exhilarating adaptation of a treasured classic.

In a world where going outside is considered taboo by many modern parents and their children alike, Swallows and Amazons stands out as an entertainment experience which demonstrates the value of getting up and going outside to find an adventure. To say my teenagers were apprehensive when we turned this movie on is an understatement; immediately my wife and I were met with lots of groans and appeals to change our mind. But the movie portrays the forgotten pastimes of venturing into the unknown (with cautious, prepared and apprehensive parental guidance). By the end of the movie, my kids were in love with the characters, and asked about sailing, something they've never asked about before. What a wonderful telling of a fairly simple and small story. If you're reading this and wondering if it's right for movie night for your screen-addicted children, just peer over at the children now... are they on their phones? If yes, then rent/buy this movie now and sit them down for it. Thank me later.
