As Fast Eddie Felson, he still believes that "money won is twice as sweet as money earned." To prove his point, he forms a profitable yet volatile partnership with Vince (Cruise), a young pool hustler with a sexy, tough-talking girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio). But when Vince's flashy arrogance leads to more than a few lost matches, all bets are off between Eddie and him. One dimensional story, and pool is hard to watch for a whole movie. Do watch "The Hustler." Tom Cruise ludicrously plays the part that Paul Newman brilliantly played in "The Hustler." Also, the director of "Hustler" wisely uses the billiard table as a plot device to display brilliant characters and their stories. Jackie Gleason, and George C. Scott are fantastic. The plot summary says Newman recreates his part from, "Hustler." No! Tom Cruise tries to do that. Newman plays the shill.

The twist at the end is superb. Cruise comes off perfectly as the cocky newby, Newman nails it as the seasoned teacher/manager, and Mary Elizabeth fills the void between the two pool sharks. Great cast. Great script. Loved it. I'm a pool player but will sincerely admit... pool was the least of my admiration of this flick. Its just a good film. Period.
