Forty years ago, Harriet Vanger disappeared from a family gathering on the island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger clan. Her body was never found, yet her beloved uncle is convinced it was murder and that the killer is a member of his own tightly knit but dysfunctional family. He employs disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) to investigate. When the pair link Harriet's disappearance to a number of grotesque murders from almost forty years ago, they begin to unravel a dark and appalling family history. But the Vanger's are a secretive clan, and Blomkvist and Salander are about to find out just how far they are prepared to go to protect themselves.

Not only outstanding actors but casting well written well portrayed well-developed characters, and an in-depth insight into each character. Even the ending was spectacular. I must say the United States version of this not only pales in comparison but pales in every way. This version along with the following two movies in the series are just outstanding and a must see for all.

I saw the American version first, was curious to see this version to look for subtle differences. Instead, this film takes significant liberties with the original source and panders to an audience that wants EVERYTHING to be neatly wrapped up. The American film is not a remake of this film... it is instead a far more faithful interpretation of the original novel and a far superior film. I will not bother seeing the other 2 films in the Swedish trilogy, preferring to wait for the American versions.

id like them whole lot better if i could get them in english, as once was the case several months ago. call me lazy but hey its extra work I just don't want, i can wait though i guess. good movies.
