I really wanted to like this movie because I've always liked Sean Penn he's a hell of an actor and the whole middle aged action star vehicle is very popular now. He gave a weird dry performance in this movie you could not get a feel for his character or really care about this guy. Very little action and what was was very substandard. In the end this lemon of a movie was really about Sean Penn being shirtless in 70% of it and showing how ripped his body was for being a middle aged dude.

The movie as a whole was a generic 'spy does job, gets out of the business then is ratted out'. The dialogue between characters attempted to emphasise background friendships but it came out as awkward sympathy. The action was okay and the visuals were a bit graphic. All in all the movie played out alright for a film I had zero expectations for

What is good: very convincing fight/cat & mouse scenes, including Penn's character's ability to use hand-to-hand, knives to avoid giving away his position to the multi-man teams trying to capture him. High points also for giving a snapshot the various ways Africa is a hell-hole due to multi-national corporations ruthless methods to ensure they can extract Africa's mineral wealth. For me, Penn convinced me that his character was truly regretful of his past actions. I also was convinced of the authenticity between Penn and Tinca's Annie. For better or worse, the killing was not sensationalistic, more deadly competent, but also certainly brutal, gruesome. No Rambo strutting about with 2 machine guns, blazing away. What is bad: some pacing issues -- the movie definitely dragged in spots. If a professional reviewer, having "seen it all before", you might downgrade to 3 stars, but no way this movie deserves a mere 17% at Rotten Tomatoes.
