Transplant + Life follows Lupe and Rick Buzo as they try and save their infant boy from a rare and deadly disease known as Hurler Syndrome. Their story begins in 2009 and takes the viewer into Lupe and Rick's own perspective, as first time parents, they discover early on that their child was different. That spending multiple trips to the ER for respiratory issues was not normal. There was something wrong. His bones would begin to contort and deform, his brain activity would slowly dissipate and by the age of 7 his body and lungs would likely give out and he would die... if he doesn't get an immediate transplant to save his life. It's a scary prospect for any parent to deal with but one they must take on. There is no guarantee with any transplant. But there is hope. Armed with their faith and love for their child, Rick and Lupe decide to leave their life in Stockton California behind and move into the transplant room with their son, documenting their entire six month ordeal on their home camcorder. With them we feel the highs and lows of the small battles that take place in the transplant halls and isolated hospital rooms. From finding out the initial transplant failed, to finding hope in another option. To seeing the family walk out the of the hospital to a joyous applause from the hospital staff thinking they've made it through, to watching their son teeter on the edge of life and death a few days later because of post-transplant complications not only once but twice. It's at times difficult and heartbreaking to watch but at the same time uplifting and beautiful. Transplant + Life doesn't shy away from the difficult and because of that it shows the true endurance of faith, love and hope.
