From the Academy Award winning producers of The King’s Speech and acclaimed director Justin Kurzel, comes a visceral and visually breath-taking retelling of the classic tale about an ambitious Scottish lord who seizes the throne with the help of his wife. Starring Academy Award nominee Michael Fassbender and Academy Award winner Marion Cotillard, Macbeth is both visually epic and a breathtaking experience.

One of the best things about Macbeth is the language. Bereft of sets and scenery, the original dialogues, soliloquies and monologues create dense and haunting characters. Unfortunately, this adaptation places cinematic attributes in priority. The speech is muted and quite monotonous whilst the set is realistic and gritty. As welcoming as it was to see a 'true' setting rather than a reimagining, my personal preference is for a focus on the rich language. How can anyone downplay 'tomorrow and tomorrow'?!

I'll be honest not a Shakespeare fan and the film has not changed that, only reinforced my view. Left the cinema halfway through watching it, it was that bad. I'm sure if you are a fan of Macbeth then you will probably enjoy it. To everyone else it was painful.

I love Macbeth. Somehow this adaptation makes it dull. Lady Macbeths role in the play is huge as she turns slowly mad. In this she goes out with a whimper. And the dialogue is kind of half Shakespearian and half EastEnders. If you need to see a movie of this watch the Roman Polanski version.
