Dom and Kay are two ordinary police community support officers on the front line of policing, handing out frisbees with 'Stay Street Smart' printed on them in east London. Detective Inspector Clinton Blair needs two undercover officers to infiltrate the Brightmarsh Gang, but the Met chiefs don't seem to get the brief, so Clinton decides to take matters into his own hands and recruits Dom and Kay in an 'off-the-books' operation. Dom and Kay succeed in persuading the gang they are fired police officers turned renegade drug dealers and are recruited into the fold. But then, events take an unexpected turn.

Dom and Kay have a body to bury. They're in a mess, frightened and completely on their own. Who else knows about their mission other than Clinton? Then they bump into fellow PCSO Pricey in a 24-hour cafe, who doesn't quite believe Dom and Kay's story as to why they are caked in mud.

Dom and Kay are given a large package of drugs to sell for the gang. While trying to shift the goods, Dom and Kay have their package robbed, and now they have to somehow find £3,000 before the gang's deadline for settling the deal passes. Dom raises her half of the money by selling everything she owns. But church mouse Kay's only option is to steal from Pastor Tomi's album fund, something he is determined not to do. Can Dom get the better of Kay and get her hands on the cash - or will Kay's unyielding faith mean they both get their legs broken?

Could the mysterious Kirsty - a contact on a dating app Dom and Kay found on Clinton's phone - be an undercover contact and just the person to get Dom and Kay out of this mess? They arrange to meet Kirsty and set about investigating the seemingly shady Superintendent Edwards by breaking into her office.

Dom and Kay discover the lady they saw Superintendent Edwards visit at an old people's home is not her mother, leading them to suspect that the home may be a front for the gang. Meanwhile, gang member Tevin grows suspicious of the pair after following them to Hackney Police Station. By now, our duo know that powerful forces are allowing drug dealing on the Brightmarsh Estate, but exactly who are they? And what do they have to do with geriatric care? Dom and Kay, posing as volunteer visitors, investigate Riverford Residential Home, where Dom makes an unlikely ally and Kay's commitment to community service finally pays dividends.

After Kay tails Celia Herrington's mystery visitor to a Ministry of Defence building, Dom is convinced that Kirsty will no longer be able to ignore their pleas for help. But first, they must hide Clinton's dossier somewhere safer - after an attempted raid on Dom's parents' house.
