Summer of Rockets

Drama series set in the UK during the Cold War period. Samuel Petrukhin, a Russian-Jewish inventor and designer of bespoke hearing aids, and his family, as he is approached by MI5 to demonstrate his work and is tasked with a secret mission.

Hannah arrives at Buckingham Palace, but is too late to be presented. Samuel meets two men who are interested in his invention - Denning and Mr Field. He learns that they are from MI5 and he is sworn to secrecy. The Petrukhins attend a fete at the Shaw's. Samuel invites Kathleen to attend the demonstration of the staff locator, but doesn't tell her it is for the MI5. He demonstrates the staff locator at the military base with Courtney and Doreen from the factory, as well as Miriam, Hannah, Sacha and Kathleen in attendance. During the demonstration, Kathleen leaves suddenly in tears and Hannah runs after her. Kathleen confides in Hannah that her son Anthony went missing five years ago when he was 21. Kathleen goes to see Mr Spearman, a private investigator, but there have been no new developments in Anthony's case. Hannah befriends Esther, a young deaf woman who works at Samuel's factory. Hannah's etiquette teacher Nicholas persuades Hannah to take part in a civil defence exercise to prepare for nuclear attacks. Samuel discovers that Mr Field and Denning have been following him for several years, photographing him and his family wherever they went. He is of interest as he and his family are Russian emigres and his father in particular had dealings with the Soviet Trade Delegation. Samuel had been providing Winston Churchill's hearing aid for many years. MI5 want Samuel to start spying on the Shaws in return for an order or the staff locator.

Samuel does not want the business of Mr Field and Mr Denning if it means being blackmailed but Courtney reveals the company is close to bankruptcy and must acquire more orders. Clutching at straws, Kathleen visits Sacha's school to see if she can glean any clues about her son Anthony's disappearance.

Kathleen visits the boarding house in search of Anthony, but has no luck. Armstrong explains to Samuel that they have reason to believe that people connected with the Shaw family could be enemies of the state. Not knowing who to believe, Samuel confronts Mr Field.

After the shooting, Field places the Petruhkin home and factory under protection. Samuel makes his own plans and goes into hiding where he meets Kathleen in secret.

Samuel learns the truth about the Shaws and the MI5 men. His is invited to an extraordinary secret meeting, while Hannah becomes increasingly worried about her father's safety.
