How it works
Most aircraft today are equipped with ADS-B transponders that transmit positional data. Flightradar24 has a rapidly growing network of over 40,000 ground stations around the world to receive this data that then shows up as aircraft moving on a map in the app. In an expanding number of regions, with the help of multilateration, we’re able to calculate the positions of aircraft that don’t have ADS-B transponders. Coverage in North America is also supplemented by real-time radar data. Coverage is variable and subject to change at any time.

Used to be a great app. Paid for a lifetime license, which they did not honor when they switched to subscription based very shortly after. Now, not only does it nag you to subscribe, it pops up full screen, extra loud ads without warning, which also have no way to exit them short of swiping back to exit out. There are better apps out there.

I don't have the premium subscription, but it's still amazing. I always open it when I see an aircraft overhead, and there's an ar feature that lets you point your camera at a plane to see what it is. I would definitely recommend this also if you're interested about knowing your upcoming flight's ETA, and if there will be a delay. 10/10, would recommend.

GREAT APP! Lets you track commercial flights worldwide along with most private aircraft and a few military. I'm about 30 miles from Fort Indian Town Gap in PA and can watch some of their training missions. I have the paid version which lets you see the ground below or ahead of the aircraft. It's a pretty cool option but eats up your data, so I only use it when I'm connected to Wifi. Even then, not much. It is pretty interesting, though, to watch the runway as they approach and land.
