I'm learning Japanese for a trip I'll be taking. After testing other apps, Mango Languages is one of the best. There are no ads, an intuitive lesson plan and design, native speakers and a logical progression in what words you learn plus notes on Japanese grammar versus English. They have placement tests if you already know some of the language and flashcards for review. I have not tried any other language with this app, but if you're wanting to learn Japanese I 100% recommend this app.

I love Mango and prefer it to other "freemium" language learning apps. For one, I was able to access full courses using my local library card, which is amazing. I feel that is much better for beginners and helps teach actual useful phrases for conversation. I really love the slides that explain culture and correct usage of certain words. Although, if you are considering learning a language that doesn't use Latin/Roman script, it seems like you do have to learn the writing system on your own

It's alright so far. the emphasis on speaking is a big plus compared to other apps but I see two major flaws. First and worst (I'm doing Spanish) they don't teach you the article along with new words. Just "cine" instead of "el cine". Big fail in a gendered language. Also there is no real evaluation/correction mechanism on the speaking. The waveforms are useless and the ones recorded by the app often seem glitchy/the wrong shape entirely.
