map support outside the USA is not robust. I'm temporarily in Thailand and find myself struggling with this apps maps.

Hi Anj, I'm sorry this isn't working for you! Tracing a route is supposed to be available with Topo Maps+ Free. If you send us an email at support@topomaps.co, we can figure out why you aren't able to use this feature.
