SMS Backup & Restore is an app that backs up (creates a copy of) SMS & MMS messages and call logs currently available on the phone. It can also restore messages and call logs from already existing backups.

Note: This app requires existing backups to be able to restore call logs and messages. It cannot recover anything without existing backups.

APP FEATURES:

Notes:
- Tested on Android 5.0 and higher
- App only restores backups made by this app
- Backup is created locally on the phone by default, but has options to upload to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Email. At no time are the files sent to the developer.
- Please ensure there is a copy of the backup outside the phone before performing a factory reset on the phone.

This App needs access to the following:
* Your messages: Backup and Restore messages. Receive SMS permission needed to properly handle messages received while the app is the default messaging app.
* Your Calls and Contact information: Backup and Restore Call Logs.
* Storage: To create the Backup file on the SD card.
* Network view and communication: Allows the app to connect to wifi for backup
* Your social information: To display and store the contact names in the Backup file.
* Run at start-up: Start scheduled Backups.
* Prevent Phone from Sleeping: To prevent the phone from going to sleep/suspended state while a Backup or Restore operation is in progress.
* Test access to Protected Storage: To create the Backup file on the SD card.
* Account Information: To authenticate with Google Drive and Gmail for cloud uploads.
* Location: Only requested and used during WiFi direct transfer due to a security requirement on Android.

4/13/26 The app hasn't worked for 10 days. I emailed support and was ignored. I will try it again someday when I switch phones but not as a daily backup. I use the free version. Works good when it works which is about 1/2 of the time. Uses a lot of battery and storage. I backup to Google Drive and auto delete after 2 days. I quit trying to cancel backups that seem to get stuck. Sometimes you can and sometimes you can't and it's very time consuming.

Works well. I back up once a week to my phone and upload it to a cloud account. If you get a lot of pictures or gifs in texts the backup file size can get quite large quickly. I usually delete gifs and unimportant picture texts every so often. In the app settings you can also specify to not back up pictures, if you want to save space.

This is a great app! I switched from an S22 Ultra to an S26 Ultra & my Google messages didn't transfer through Smart Switch for some reason. I had them backed up & they still wouldn't transfer over Wi-Fi or USB-C cable. I had a lot of messages I didn't want to lose. A Verizon rep at the store told me about the app. I backed up all my messages & downloaded them to my new phone preserving them all. I'm very thankful for the Vzw rep that recommended it.
