Think Dirty is the easiest way to learn about the potentially toxic ingredients in your cosmetics and personal care products. It’s an independent source that allows you to compare products as you shop. Just scan the product barcode, and Think Dirty will give you easy-to-understand info on the product, track dirty ingredients, and shop for cleaner options.

• Search by Keyword or Barcode Scanning: Our database lists over 850,000 cosmetics and personal care products from Canada and the U.S.

• Personalized Ingredient Preferences (Premium): Save time by pre-selecting your Allergens, Ingredient preferences and personalizing your shopping experience. Ingredient alerts will be presented if we find flagged ingredients in the products you viewed.

• Search by Ingredient (Premium): Unlock to get detailed information about its usage, health impact, sources, and which products contain such ingredients.

• Search by Curated Categories (Premium Feature): Unlock to access our curated speciality lists such as Mineral Sunscreens, SLES-Free Skincare, Vegan Makeup

• Expiry Date Tracker: Is that mascara still good to use, but don't remember how long you have had it? Now you can keep track of its expiry date on your Bathroom Shelf. Enter Open Date and Shelf Life, and you will never put expired products on your face again!

• Dirty Meter®: A comprehensive rating is given, along with detailed (but easy-to-understand) information on ingredients, certifications, and health impacts.

Ratings and reviews

I previously gave this app 5 stars a few years ago when I first discovered it. Over the years, they have started charging for basic uses that they didn't previously charge for. With the free plan, you can only scan maybe 3 items and get the basic info. After that, they don't show you anything about the product you're trying to get information for unless you upgrade. I can understand charging for additional info beyond the basic score but it doesn't even give you a score! Stupid.

I like the simplicity and the concept of the app. Unlike other similar apps, it does give you some recommendation of products that may have better ratings. This brings me to 3 major downsides: 1) give me recommendations that are similar products to what I looked up (eg. show me hairspray products if that's what I looked up not shampoo, conditioners, etc) 2) lack of ability to filter products outside of type of product it was inputted as. 3) search doesnt show the specific product/brand typed in

Missing so many products. If you have made an effort to remove concerning chemicals from your home, this isn't the app for you. it is a great starter app for looking at basic products but once you get into the specialty, fragrance free and other chemical free products it does not have a huge data base. It also misclassified products and existing ratings can vary tremendously ( example, one product is scored as both 2 and 5).
