While Hello Chinese is similar to other language learning apps, it has some key differences which set it apart. First of all the "Teacher talk" sessions are great, and make it feel like your taught by a teacher to some degree. Secondly, it has plenty of speaking exercises, some with less accuracy than desired, but it still gets you speaking a lot, which is important for a language like Mandarin. Also it offers support for both Simplified and Traditional characters, which is awesome! Also no ads

The first few lessons are great for beginners, but after a while you need to resort to different sources before being able to return to HC because of a lack of some functions. For example, the seperate meanings of the characters that make up words is not explained. (星期 = week is in there, but 星 = star and 琪 = period are not) Also the hanzi writing tips are only about one part of the more complicated ones. (月 indicates a bodypart if on the left side of a character, such as in 腿) Great app all in all but could still use some work!

Great app for starting with Chinese, but when you ge more advanced, the review capability becomes a huge issue - it's incredibly bad and makes it very tough to retain whatever I learned. At some point I realized I just memorized specific sentences and I don't actually know how to use what I'm learning, and at the same time the vocab I've worked to built is dissolving since the review triggers the same things over and over.
