📖 The Book of Righteousness and Kinship 📖

By Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Qurashi al-Taymi al-Bakri, known as Ibn al-Jawzi

Enjoy reading Ibn al-Jawzi's book, Al-Birr and Kinship, with the best app for books and stories, offline, and many other features.

God Almighty sent Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, with the final message, encompassing the happiness of nations and the lives of peoples. A stable life stems from "righteousness and kinship," which is the highest level of worship in Islam. "Righteousness and kinship" were among the greatest meanings contained in this Muhammadan message. Islam prescribed benevolence in all things and made the best work the maintenance of the relationship between the servant and his Lord, and between individuals. There is no doubt that relationships in any society are based, at best, on obligations from one party to the other. Considering their fulfillment to others, these are called "duties," and considering their entitlement to others, they are called "rights." Among these rights and duties are righteousness and kinship.

Righteousness, as used in Islamic law, is a comprehensive term for all types of goodness. It refers to what goes beyond the limits of piety. It is a level above piety and below the level of ihsan. Kinship refers to compassion and tenderness. God Almighty's connection to His servants is His mercy and His compassion, glory be to Him, through His blessings upon them, or His connection to the people of His Kingdom and the Supreme Companion, His closeness to them, and His opening of closed hearts.

This book contains fifty-four chapters, including: Chapter One: Mentioning the rationale for being dutiful to parents and maintaining kinship ties. Chapter Seven: How to be dutiful to parents. Chapter Sixteen: Mentioning the nature of disobedience. Chapter Twenty-One: The sin of causing people to insult one's parents. Chapter Twenty-Six: The reward for spending on one's family. Chapter Fifty: Sponsoring an orphan. Chapter Fifty-Four: That those who do good in this world will be those who do good in the Hereafter.

Author:
Ibn al-Jawzi, Abu al-Faraj Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Qurashi al-Taymi al-Bakri, was a Hanbali jurist, hadith scholar, historian, and theologian (510 AH/1116 AD - 12 Ramadan 597 AH). He was born and died in Baghdad. He enjoyed widespread fame and a prominent position in his oratory, preaching, and writing, and he also excelled in many sciences and arts. His lineage goes back to Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr al-Siddiq. He was known as Ibn al-Jawzi because of a walnut tree that once grew in his house in the town of Wasit. There was no other walnut tree in the town, and it was also said that it was a reference to "Fardat al-Jawz," the port of the Basra River.

- In your hands is a book that encompasses many of the virtues that Islam has urged us to adopt, and that our Prophet Muhammad, and after him his Companions and Followers (may Allah be pleased with them), conveyed to us. Fifty-four chapters, windows that open and illuminate, erasing from the heart the darkness of cruelty, self-love and evil. Fifty-four chapters in which Ibn al-Jawzi narrates the virtues accompanied by hadiths from the Sunnah and stories from the Followers and Companions. This book accompanied me at a time when I needed it, at a time when I wanted my soul's cloud to be lifted and my breath to rain... and it did. I won't go on for long or offer quotes, as the entire book is full of wisdom and lessons for us. What affected me most were the chapters on honoring parents and obeying them, and the encouragement of submission and humility before them. I see our condition and my heart sinks, and I pray to God to forgive us for our shortcomings in our duty to them, and to have mercy on those who have passed away. It's an enjoyable and delicious book, with a sweet style. I recommend it. It's one of the books I'd like to own and pass on to everyone around me, so they may breathe like I do :)

❇️ Some quotes from the book "Birr and Kinship" by Ibn al-Jawzi ❇️

"Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib would not eat with his mother, even though he was the most dutiful of people to her. When he was asked about that, he said, 'I fear eating with her, lest her eye fall on some food without my knowledge, and I eat it, and then I would be disobedient to her.'"

“Whenever Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) wanted to leave his home, he would stand at his mother’s door and say, ‘Peace be upon you, my mother, and the mercy and blessings of Allah.’ She would say, ‘And upon you be peace, my son, and the mercy and blessings of Allah.’ He would say, ‘May Allah have mercy on you as you raised me when I was young.’ She would say, ‘May Allah have mercy on you as you cared for me when I was old.’ And when he wanted to enter, he would do the same.”

Ahmad said: Yazid narrated to us, saying: Hisham narrated, on the authority of Hafsa, on the authority of Salman ibn Amir, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: “Charity given to a poor person is charity, and charity given to a relative is two things: charity and upholding the ties of kinship.”
