About this app

Grain Camera is a film camera for your phone, not a filter you apply afterwards.

You pick the film first. The viewfinder shows you that film as you frame the shot - the colour, the grain, the vignette, the light leak - so what you see is what you get. Press the shutter and the photo is finished. No editing step, no export, nothing to fix later.

Every photo comes back as a print: mounted on a paper border with the film it was shot on and the year, the way a lab hands them back to you.


SIX FILMS

GR-100 - classic warm stock, fine grain
FADE - milky and low contrast, a roll left in the sun
GOLD - golden sunlit stock with an orange light leak
'84 - retro digicam, cool shift, heavy grain, date stamp
MONO - high contrast black and white
NOIR - deep, moody black and white

Each one is tuned by hand. A single FILM slider dials any of them back for a lighter touch. It sits on the camera screen, always visible, always showing its value - nothing hidden, nothing to hunt for.


WHILE YOU SHOOT

- Swipe across the viewfinder to change film
- Volume buttons take the photo, so you can hold the phone steady
- Self timer, 3 or 10 seconds, with a countdown you can read from a distance
- Pinch to zoom, tap to focus
- Flash off, auto or on
- Front and back camera


YOU DECIDE

- Border: paper, dark, or off
- Date stamp: follow the film, always, or never
- Grid lines for composition
- Shutter sound, which stays quiet when your phone is on silent


WHERE YOUR PHOTOS GO

Straight to your gallery, into an album called Grain Camera. They are ordinary JPEGs, tagged with the time you actually took them, so they land in the right place in your timeline instead of at the end of it. They stay on your phone if you uninstall the app.


PRIVATE BY DESIGN

Grain Camera has no internet permission. It cannot upload your photos, because it cannot reach the internet at all. No account, no sign up, no analytics, no ads. Everything happens on your phone.


WHAT IT DOES NOT HAVE

No feed. No endless filter list. No subscription. No stickers, collages or beauty tools. It is a camera with six films and a shutter button, and that is the point.

Shoot a birthday, a walk home, a friend who will not sit still. Come back to prints instead of a folder of files you meant to edit.

Live film preview in the viewfinder needs Android 12 or newer. On earlier versions the preview is approximate; the saved photo is the same either way.
