It borders the Free State of Bavaria and includes the northern area of the eponymous region grave field.
The municipality has 12 districts, bringing together approximately 5,500 inhabitants. The entire municipality covers an area of 11,670 hectares, or about 117 square kilometers.
For 01.12.2007 the municipality grave field created by the merger of the formerly independent political communities Behrungen, Berkach, Bibra, Exdorf with district Obendorf, Jüchsen, Nordheim, Queienfeld, Rentwertshausen, Schwickershausen and Wolfmannshausen. On 01.01.2012 Bauerbach happened.
