About this app

Unlock four millennia of history with CunAI, an offline-first Sumerian dictionary and search engine.

Whether you are an Assyriologist, linguistics student, or ancient history enthusiast, CunAI connects ancient clay with modern silicon. Built from lexical data in the electronic Pennsylvania Sumerian Dictionary (ePSD2) and Kaikki/Wiktionary, CunAI offers dictionary lookup, cuneiform sign identification, and semantic search, all processed locally on your device.

What CunAI does not do

CunAI never writes or translates text. Deep Search uses a local embedding model to rank existing ePSD2 entries by meaning; nothing is generated, and nothing is invented. Every result is an attested dictionary entry you can trace back to its source.

Key features:

• Hybrid search: Find lemmas as you type using headwords, attested forms, or glosses. Diacritics are optional, so searching for "gestu" can find "ŋeštug".

• Local semantic search: Go beyond exact keyword matches. Search in English for concepts such as "vessels for beer" or "tools for building" and find the Sumerian entries that match, ranked by meaning. Powered by EmbeddingGemma-300m and ONNX Runtime, running privately on your device.

• Interactive sign list: Browse and filter more than 2,000 ePSD2 cuneiform signs. View glyphs and readings, then copy glyphs with a single tap.

• Cuneiform-first rendering: View Sumerian transliterations alongside their Unicode cuneiform equivalents. More than 97% of lemmas and 92% of written forms are rendered as cuneiform glyphs.

• Detailed entries: Explore parts of speech, senses, written forms, attestation counts, and timeline charts covering periods from the Early Dynastic era through the Seleucid period.

• A–Z explorer: Browse the full Sumerian vocabulary. Filter by part of speech and sort alphabetically or by attestation frequency.

• Wiktionary integration: Access English Wiktionary etymologies and definitions offline through an optional one-time download.

Privacy and offline-first design

The dictionary, entry views, and sign list work fully offline the moment you install CunAI. Nothing else is required to use them.

Deep Search, the semantic meaning-based mode, is optional and needs a one-time setup download of about 404 MB: the embedding model and the prebuilt search index. We recommend connecting to Wi-Fi before starting it. The files are stored on your device and are never downloaded again, and the setup resumes where it left off if it is interrupted.

Your searches and dictionary lookups stay on your device. CunAI does not track you, collect telemetry, or make external API calls for search. Vector embeddings and search indexes run locally in native code.
