About this app

WHAT IT DOES

ReadFluent times a child's oral reading and works out words correct per minute.
Start the timer, listen, tap when a word is misread, and stop when the child is
done.

The reading
- One minute is the default, which is the standard probe length
- The whole screen is the tap target, so you can watch the child and the text
rather than the phone. Undo takes the last tap back
- Stop whenever the child finishes. The figure is worked out from the time
actually read, not from the minute you aimed for
- The screen is held awake while the timer runs, because a screen that sleeps
mid-reading takes the tap target with it

The number, and the rule that produced it
- Words correct per minute is the words read, less the errors, over the elapsed
minutes
- Accuracy is worked out from the words the child got through, never from the
length of the passage, because a timed reading usually stops part way through
- Self-corrections are counted separately from errors and, by default, are not
errors. That is the usual convention, and you can change it
- Whichever rule is in force is printed beside the figure and on the report, so
a number can never be read without knowing which convention produced it

Three readings, and the middle one
- The usual convention takes three one minute readings and records the middle
figure. One reading is one probe, not a score
- On any day with three or more readings for a child, the app shows that middle
figure beside the individual probes
- It does not quietly take the median on your behalf. It reports both, because
which figure you want is your decision

Over time
- A words-correct-per-minute chart per child, read from that child's own past
readings and from nothing else
- Below three readings it says there is not enough to say rather than naming a
direction
- Unfinished readings are kept out of every figure, every chart and every
report until you finish them
- Your own passages, with the set and where to find them in your folder
- A report you can hand to a parent or keep in the file
- Backup and restore in one file

WHO IT IS FOR
- Reading tutors and intervention teachers
- Speech and language practitioners running fluency probes
- Homeschooling parents timing a child's reading
- Anyone who takes a one minute reading and wants the arithmetic done the same
way every time

WHAT IT DOES NOT DO

It has no benchmark table, no percentile, no grade band, no age equivalent and
no comparison with any other child. It supplies the number; what that number
means for this child is yours to judge against the standard you already use.

It does not listen. There is no microphone permission and no audio recording of
any kind: you are the listener, and the app records the decisions you make.

It is not an assessment instrument and it does not diagnose anything.

CHILDREN'S DATA

Children's names and readings stay on the device. There is no account and no
sign in, and no ads: this app carries no advertising code at all. The app does
send crash reports and anonymous usage statistics.
