About this app

Lunar tells you what the moon looks like tonight.

The moon changes a little every day. Lunar works that change out and shows it for the sky above the place you are standing.

■ Today

The moon is drawn as it actually appears at this moment. You get the phase name, how much of the disc is lit, and the moon's age in days since the last new moon.

Moonrise and moonset are worked out for your location, along with sunrise and sunset. The next new moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter are counted down for you.

■ Calendar

A whole month at a glance. Every date carries the shape the moon had that day, so finding the next full moon takes no counting. Tap a date to see it in full.

■ Home screen widgets

Three to choose from.

Moon icon: the smallest one, tonight's shape and nothing else
Moon today: adds the date and how much of the moon is lit
Moon week: three days back, three days ahead, tonight in the middle

■ Reminders

A daily reminder about tonight's moon, at a time you choose.

New moon, first quarter, full moon and last quarter each get their own reminder the day before, so a full moon is harder to miss.

■ Location

Use your device's location, or pick a city yourself. Nine hundred cities are built in, so you can look up the moon at a destination before you travel.

Turning the location permission down is fine. Lunar estimates an approximate position from your time zone instead.

■ About the calculations

Positions of the moon and sun are computed with the methods set out in Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms. Phase instants land within minutes, and rise and set times are resolved for your observing site.

All of it happens on your device. Tonight's moon is there whether or not you have a connection.
