With stroke-order independent handwriting recognition, 320k+ example sentences, 200k+ words and 6k+ Kanji database!
Akebi allows you to use character masks to filter out thousands of words from a large Japanese Dictionary. It allows you to specify what radicals appear in each character of the word, and set particular characters. Using this, you can find extremely specific words without a lot of Japanese knowledge.
Akebi is designed to allow fast searching, and as such, the word can be specified by last letter, first letter or any letter in between.
NOTE ABOUT THE INTERNET PERMISSION:
I hope this doesn't scare you off downloading Akebi: It is fully available offline, but the dictionary needs to be downloaded first. If you choose to allow it, Akebi will also send a small bit of analytical data back to me so I can find out which features are most used (It absolutely will not send anything if you disable it.).
Some of the features include:
- Word lists
These allow you to add any word you're searching for to a list with just one press. The next time this word fits a mask you're searching for, it appears in red at the top of all possible words, to make it easy to find in case you forget. It's also good for words that the dictionary doesn't have, like names specific to what you're doing. You can even test yourself on these words too using a flashcard test! If you want, you can export them to a text file for use elsewhere as well.
- Radical search
Specify which characters of the word contain what radicals. Words that don't fit this will be filtered out.
- Inbuilt Japanese Keyboard
You don't even need to swap keyboards to use Akebi. You just jump in and start typing. But, if you prefer, you can turn this feature off if it causes issues with your keyboard, or if you just want to use your normal keyboard! You can even pick Akebi's keyboard/handwriting recognition as your input method!
- Kanji descriptions
Find out how common a character is, what grade level it is, what it means, how to read it, its Unicode number, how many strokes are in it, its reference numbers (Heisig, Nelson...), a stroke order diagram for it, a decomposition of it, all the words that contain it...
- English to Japanese searching
Search with English as well!
- Handwriting recognition
Akebi has custom built handwriting recognition - and stroke order doesn't matter! Find that complex kanji quickly thanks to the "Tomoe" handwriting database!
- Example sentences
Akebi has 320,000+ example sentences: search for any word and find out how to use it in a sentence! Tap the sentence for further information: including each word in the sentence's definition and reading.
- Kanji test
Test yourself on any kanji you want! Create sets and test yourself!
- Deconjugation
Search for 言って and you'll get results for 言う. Works for other forms too, such as ます, ない, た, られる/Potential form.
- Animated stroke order diagrams
See exactly how to draw a kanji correctly!
- Asynchronous loading
Akebi opens instantly: you can start typing in the word you want to find while Akebi loads the dictionary in the background.
- Tiny memory footprint
Akebi uses only 20mb of storage space for the entirety of its data. Compressions are handwritten by myself!
- Holo themed
Using ActionBarSherlock, I've totally rethemed the entire UI, adding tonnes more features and making the app much easier to use
- No DRM
Because it just makes everyone angry!
- No Ads
Because they kill battery life!
Akebi has to do an initial ~20mb download when it starts - so make sure to have internet access on first use!

Awesome! Not only is it a fantastic dictionary, it's also a GREAT way to study Kanji. I know there's a conjugation feature in the works, and that is...well, that'd make this the only appyou'd need for any of your Japanese-learning needs!

Just Download It You're probably looking here to see if you should get this dictionary, right? You should. I love how the creator took into consideration the fact that we use dictionaries for studying and added the flashcard option. No ads?! Shocking since it's so good. Plus the slight humor made smile. Not many dictionaries do that yknow. 🙌👍

Probably the best JDic out there I'm extremely impressed with this Japanese dictionary. It's a little differently designed from a typical dictionary but it only takes about 5 minutes to adjust and once you do, it's easy to appreciate. It is almost certainly the best japanese dictionary for Android (tied with IMI perhaps). If the developer is interested in a possible improvement, I think a history feature would improve usability.

This is the best Japanese dictionary for Android Very nice design, English and Japanese lookup (romaji and kana), kanji lookup, kanji stroke order, offline, example sentences, save kanji or words to lists, flashcard reviews. Basically this app has everything except word conjugations which is supposedly a planned feature. Aaaand no ads! EDIT: A few cons: The example sentences kinda suck - lots are waay to long or use very obscure words. Luckily, this app makes it very easy to look up the words in the sentence. Also, could not find the word, 仰向き

I really love it but.. There's something Im confused.. why there's two or three variations of kanji stroke order? What the heck is Vtlst? MidFst? I'd appreciate it if you can explain it to me.. thx for all your effort in making this app

Sorry for the very late reply. This is a terrible bug that's been in Akebi for quite some time, and I'm working on fixing it. I've tried recovering the data with users before, and I've had no luck. If you are going to keep using Akebi, please make sure you use the "backup" and "restore" features in the options menu. I'm really really sorry!! Awesome! Not only is it a fantastic dictionary, it's also a GREAT way to study Kanji. I know there's a conjugation feature in the works, and that is...well, that'd make this the only appyou'd need for any of your Japanese-learning needs!

Hey Gregory! Thanks for the kind words! I'm deep into development of the next version at the moment, so after that comes out I'll have time to add a history feature (many have requested this before). Cheers! Thanks for the review! If you're interested in getting the conjugation feature as soon as I make it, please check out the beta version here: https://craxic.com/akebi-beta/. Thanks! Hi there Sheila! "VtLst, MidFst" and all that come directly from the KanjiVG database. Basically, "VtLst" will draw vertical strokes last, "MidFst" will draw strokes in the middle first. Generally it tends to follow that sort of pattern! Hope that helps, and thanks for the great review! Awesome dictionary I started using this dictionary after asking recommendation from my friends and this is really the best Japanese dictionary I have. It really help my language skills a little. And the best thing is... IT'S ENTIRELY FREE!!!! Yay!
Craxic November 14, 2015
Thanks so much for the great review! Thank your friends for me! Great! But... UI is awesome! The font is a bit unorganized though. At first I was wondering about that 'weird' feature for searching kanji but it's surprisingly useful! The handwriting recognition is superb as well. I have no complaint about verb conjugations and such, but the examples are terrible. There are so many mistakes of word reading in examples. I'll write feedback to give details about them. And I know you're still fixing things, so I'm looking forward to it.
Craxic December 20, 2015
Hi there! What do you mean by the font being unorganized? If you're interested in more accurate example sentences, you can check out the beta version available here: https://craxic.com/akebi-beta/. I've tried to fix that. It's still a work in progress though. Thanks! 5 Stars Per Second I've only spent a short time with the app, but I can already see this replacing the other app I been using. Was a bit skeptical at first due to the low install base, but doubts were blown away quite quickly. There's still a few rough edges here and there, but none of them are deal breakers. Huge props to the dev for responding to all the reviews as well. And it's ad-free too; how?
Craxic November 22, 2015
Hi there! I'm so glad you like it (and that the low install count didn't scare you off)! It's ad-free because nobody likes ads, and I just want people to use something I make. I make no money from Akebi. Also, thanks for noticing all the replies I do! Cheers! best dic out there except some mistakes in the sentence forming example sentences, and also it would be perfect if you could easily save lists on SD, mine doesn't quit work. I hope you can fix it next version, except a those few flaws, the example sentences and flash cards are awesome. would gladly pay money for this app
Craxic November 14, 2015
Hi there! You should be able to save lists to your SD card using the export feature of the lists (press the "..." button in the action bar when a list is open). Thanks for the great review! Issue with example sentences Hello. There seems to be some issues with the example sentences database and need someone to confirm. 事がす and 事がする appear in almost every third example, usually at at the end of a predicative or a noun. These "forms" do not appear in ANY examples online in the same context as in akebi's example database. I can provide screenshots if necessary. I need to know if this just calls for a reinstall on my end or if this is widespread. Thanks! Akebi is otherwise a great tool and I use it alot
Craxic November 22, 2014
Hmmm... That is strange. Must be a mistake I made somewhere. Sorry about that! I'm in the middle of recoding the dictionary/example sentences/backend so hopefully that should be fixed in the new version coming out hopefully early 2015. Thanks! Im an intermediate\advanced This app is missing something ...but This is the best japanese study aid i ever downloaded more useful then the stupid games i play -_- im an advanced\intermediate level this is the app you need if your seriouse about japanese LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE please tell me you guys are going to add new features or something cool¡

Thanks Zinat, happy to help! One of the best This app is one of the best dictionaries to download if you're learning Japanese. UI is good and it's fast, plus its FREE with NO ADS. Keep up the good work 👍 Thank you for making an app like this.

Cheers! Came from reddit, did not regret. I've tried quite a few other Japanese dictionary apps, WWWJDIC, Jisho and the likes. The only noteworthy things this dictionary lacks compare to them are OCR and history, though I can do without both. Sleek design, offline, free/without ads, inclusive, feature-rich and a lot more that would probably count as spoilers, haha. Also, plus points for the humor. I probably haven't used Akebi enough to run into any substantial hiccups, but so far it's one of the best app I've seen. おつかれさま Craxicさん (。>﹏<。)

Thanks so much Minh!! Glad you like it! Working on a new update at the moment. Hopefully I'll be able to address those issues soon! the best the only thing wrong with this program is that i didnt find it sooner. ive been learning japanese for over a year now and this app would have made a world of a diference . my god the amount of work this man put into the tutorial alone is amazing. he really cares that you the user can learn everythingyou may need to know about the app. its so user friendly no in app purchases. no nonsense. ive been using jed and anki and obenkyo and various other apps. when this one does it all and doest it better.
Craxic September 28, 2015
Thanks for the shining review, I'm really glad you find it useful! Amazing! I just downloaded this app. I can't believe that something this functional and comprehensive is a free app without ads! This is better than any of the ad/paid apps I've used before and provides great depth for learning, practice and review.
Craxic January 6, 2016
Thanks so much! Saved me a few times in Japan During a trip to Japan, I was extremely happy to have this app available to identify the kanji and words I didn't know, because the handwritten kanji recognition works really well. The splash screen is a bit strange, but once it's gone the app is actually quite efficient and useful, though I regret the old design, which was simpler but more effective in my opinion. Despite the design I don't like as much as the original one, and the list management system that works strangely (I was unable to backup or restore any vocabulary list on my old phone, had to refill it manually every time), I give it 5 stars because it was really useful to me in a real-life situation.
Craxic November 22, 2014
Thanks so much for your great review. I'm sorry you don't like the new design so much, I worked very hard on trying to make it better! Most people seem to like it, but clearly there are still people who like the old one! If you have any specific suggestions for it, please don't hesitate to email me or use the in-app form. Thanks again! By Far the Best Hey, I love this dictionary. It's so helpful and visually appealing. I actually constantly check Play Store hoping there'll be an update, which is something i don't do for any other apps. Only two things that would make this better. A history would be invaluable, as someone else mentioned. But also some sort of explanation about the kanji features? I really don't understand the kanji grid, and it's the only thing without a cute tutorial for some reason.
Craxic October 26, 2015
Hi Phil,
Sorry about the lack of progress on Akebi. Luckily, I will have finished all my exams in 3 weeks, so after that point I can get stuck into the few remaining things I need to do before I can release a beta.
A history feature has been requested, and it's "on the list". As for a Kanji list tutorial, sounds like a good idea!
Thanks! Unique. Fun. Useful. The kanji decomposition is incredible, and the ability to "share" data with other apps makes it very useful for creating flashcards etc... The clever layout is fun to explore. PLUS it's free and ad-free! One of the best.
Craxic March 8, 2014
I'm glad you like it, thanks for the motivation! This is definitely the best I found when I was looking for a japanese offline dictionary in autumn 2014. Big thanks to the developer! :) Great hand writing recognition already included. Great integration with other apps, for example Ankidroid. Great UI and colors :D could use also a "night" theme, meaning a black theme for saving battery, that kind of thing. Also, it displays the characters with a chinese fonts, for example in "過ぎる" the little square in the kanji is on the left side of the big square, while it should be on the right side. But this maybe an system-wide android problem, because it appears in other apps too. I had this problem also in Ankidroid, but I was able to solve it by installing a font into the app. It may be that there's an easy solution to this but I still haven't found it, and it doesn't bother me anyway, it's just that it could be confusing for beginners who don't know that there's a difference between chinese and japanese fonts.
Craxic December 6, 2015
Hmm, yes this is definitely something that can be improved. Perhaps I can include a font file with Akebi so that the characters look like they're supposed to. Thanks! Best Japanese Dictionary I love the interface- easy, smooth, and simple. There developer behind this app has put a great amount of energy and time into this app and is quite a person, him/herself. You can see a bit of the developer's side through the tutorial- very funny and enjoyable to go through. The dictionary itself helps a lot and can determine if the word that you put in the search in which type of conjugation its in (which is quite neat). It also gives you examples and several meanings of it. You don't need to be online to search up these words but just make sure the dictionary is downloaded beforehand ^^ In addition to that, you can save some words as flashcards and quiz yourself. Nonetheless, this is a GREAT APP THAT IS FREE. It helps and super easy to follow! I really appreciate it and I would like to thank the developer sincerely.
Craxic April 12, 2015
Thanks so so much Yona, people like you give me motivation to keep working on it! I'm really glad you like it and thanks so much for writing such a detailed review! Good luck with your studies! Near Perfect This app is great! I found it by chance last year, and it completely blows away other options. There are two things I feel this would greatly benefit from implementing: OCR and Anki integration. OCR would be a big help in reading a bunch of complex Kanji in at the same time. A word of advice, tho': Give us some way to reuse the same image. Anki support would be useful to convert our lists immediately into a deck we can use in Anki.
Craxic May 9, 2015
Hi Matt! Thanks for the feedback. I'm very busy working on an update at the moment, so hopefully I'll be able to get to those things soon. Anki support has been called for by quite a few people before, I'll be sure to give it even higher priority. OCR is something I've considered before, but I'm not sure of how much space it would take. Thanks! Came here from JED - loved it! In my constant device wiping I always end up installing JED, 'cause it's simply one of the best er... JEDs I know and it works nice. However, I'm having some troubles trying to download the dictionary itself, so I checked their Google Play page and they recommended this one. I'm glad they did. I'll be using both from now on, but this one just won my top spot. Akebi is brilliantly designed, very useful, and the developer apparently has a very, /very/ good sense of humour. Don't install this app if you don't have one. Luckily I do, and I had a real laugh reading the tutorial mode and Terms and Conditions. 5/5 will recommend to my friends!
Craxic April 26, 2014
Nawww! Thanks so so much for the motivation! Absolutely Perfect I've finally found the perfect Japanese dictionary. This is the most feature-packed dictionary I've found, and unlike all the others, it actually works. The advanced search is amazing, and the handwriting recognition actually works. And it's freaking free! The only negatives I can think of are the slightly confusing interface (which I quickly got used to), and an outdated design. But I prioritize function over form, so this still gets 5 stars from me 👍
Craxic December 31, 2015
Thanks for the great review Ariya! At some point I'd like to update the design to use the material design guidelines, but as you can imagine that's quite a job. The kanji search is powerful but takes a bit to get used to. The kanji quizzing function is very useful, though still confusing to understand (what is "infusing"? And what is"knowledge level"). Also, I wish there were some pre-provided lists to use, but that's just me nitpicking. Overall, this is definitely the best dictionary I've used so far!
Craxic April 10, 2016
Thanks a lot victor! There's a lot of places that need improvement, especially the kanji grid stuff. When you "infuse" a kanji, Akebi will start testing you on it. "Knowledge level" is just a number, usually from 0 (Unknown) to 100 (Committed to memory). Anyways, thanks for the great review! Confusing, but useful. No ads v2.02+ The interface looks like it was meant to be easy to use, but I find it hard to navigate, doing something that I don't think it will do, or doing nothing when I expect it to. Giving more feedback to the user will make it better.
Craxic March 8, 2014
If you get a chance, would you be able to give some specific examples so I can try to improve it? I like the dictionary but I am having an issue with some kanji showing up as chinese glyphs. Search results are chinese, if I open a result title and examples font depends on my system font which I can switch it to a japanese font so it's fine but, kanji section is also chinese while stroke orders are fine. So it's inconsistent. This is not the only app I am having this issue and it's driving me mad. Changing system language and font doesn't fix this problem.
Craxic March 5, 2016
Hmm, sorry to hear that. I think I should probably bundle a font with Akebi to mitigate any of these problems. The problem with that though, is that Japanese fonts can be quite large because of all the characters. Something for me to think about. Anyways, thanks for the feedback! HTC One Ok so it has a good layout, thats about it! every time i open the app its shows lists at top but nothing there. I spent over an hour grouping adjectives, nouns etc, now the app wont even work. I am dissapointed as I really liked the layout. However there are many better dictionaries out there. I will stick with JED and colourdict. Please let me know if you make this app better.
そごい!! Very few hiccups here and there but man, is this dictionary awesome! (I'm a monster, thanks. xD)

Thanks for the positive feedback, I really appreciate it! wow I thought I was never going to find a great JDict app no matter if it's free or not! There it is! ありがとう(๑•́₃ •̀๑). It has so many great examples and it's easy to use even for me.So far, I still love it! The best_(:_」∠)_. I love the design! beautiful. The developer is so dedicated. Great job. Looking forward to the new version. (●o≧д≦)o頑張れェェェ♪

Awesome, thanks! One of the few kanji tools that actually helps me learn. I've had great difficulty truly learning kanji with other tools. The way this tool works seems to work well for me - I find it superior to everything I've used so far. I only wish it let me trace and check katakana, as well. I could use a brush-up! UI is clean, features are pretty easy to use. Occasionally, the spare nature of the UI steepens the learning curve, but it's very efficient when you're used to using it. The fact that it's free is just extremely awesome. Thank you, developer!
Craxic July 1, 2014
I've been thinking about adding a katakana/hiragana feature for people new to the language. Thanks for the support! Copy the Kanji? Please add the function to copy the Kanji when looking up so that users can paste to other apps in case of necessary. Thanks for quick reply!
Craxic April 14, 2015
Hi there! This feature already exists as far as I can tell, although its a bit difficult to get to at the moment. Press the "..." on a green Kanji box, and then press "Add To..." from there, go to "Share" and then "Copy Kanji". Hope that helps, sorry for the confusion. EDIT: Thanks so much for changing your rating! really gr9 Finally got the app after my 15th time eating potatos with my 78 armed alien mate underwater and on fire. But nah legit, once you get the hang of it, it is a great app.
Craxic February 4, 2016
Cheers m80, send pics! As someone who lives in Japan I always have multiple dictionaries installed. This is one of my top three and therefore deserves a permanent home on all of my devices.
Craxic March 10, 2016
Thanks so much Sam, it's an honour ;) Lists? Capital letters? The app is good overall, but what's the deal with only being to activate one Iist at a time in order to add to it? It's super frustrating that I have to search the word, go back to the menu, activate the Iist, search the word again and then add it to the Iist. And then do it all over again for the next word. Please make it so that all lists are accessible! Also, when searching in English if you put a capital letter it doesn't recognise the word.
Craxic April 18, 2015
Thanks for the rating! For adding words to a list that isn't active, you can press the triangular "Send To" button at the top of the word. From there, all the lists are visible and you can add to them. As for the capital letter thing: sorry about that! Funnily enough, nobody has ever complained about that before! Thanks for letting me know! Losing lists Great app if it would stop deleting the lists made. Took the time to make 8 levels of over 100 kanji and 8 levels of over 100+ japanese vocabulary to which program deleted them all. Decided to give app an other try. Thank goodness I had only gotten 2 levels of kanji and vocabulary done before abeki deleted that list. Would love to use it as a study aid and If it worked, would even pay for a pro type version. Too many glitches and extremely laggy for my taste. When it was on, it was like Donkey Kong. I'll come back when it's fixed.
Craxic September 3, 2014
Hi! I'm really sorry you're experiencing these issues. I know how long it takes to add lists, and I'd be furious too if they all got deleted, so I'm really sorry!. I'll try to fix these issues as soon as I can, so please send me an email if you want me to tell you when I've fixed it. I only get to reply once here, and with limited characters too. Review deleted
