The manor has no bottom. Every floor holds eight doors, and every door looks exactly
the same. One or two of them are the stairs down. The rest hide coins, a hungry ghost,
a barrage room, a supply room — or nothing at all. Nothing is ever labelled, so the only
map you get is the one in your head.
Move with the stick, push it up to jump, and tap OPEN to step through. Padlocked doors
guard the best loot, but picking one takes a second and a half of standing perfectly
still — do that with a mummy closing in and you are gambling with your last heart.
One or two pairs of doors on each floor are secretly linked: walk into one, come out of
the other. Learn which pair is which and you have an escape route for the rest of the run.
Some doors open into a vault: a few seconds to grab what you can, with a guard sweeping
the row where the big coins sit. He costs you no health, only the clock. Other doors
simply hand you the coins and let you move on. The staircase is a
shaft, so the way back up is always the door you climbed out of — use it once and it seals.
Candles burn along the walls. Every so often something walks the corridor and puts them
out, one after another, and the floor goes black. All you can see then is the ground at
your feet — the doors are gone, and your memory is all you have left. That is also when the ghosts wake: in the light they hang there thin and
harmless, in the dark they move, they hurt, and no trap will touch them.
The things that live here only see what is in front of them. Watch the cone of light
each one casts — pale means it has not spotted you, red means it has — and you can
slip past behind its back, or jump clean over its head. None of them will finish you
off alone: once one has you down to your last heart, it loses interest and drifts away.
Rocks fall from the ceiling, spiked balls roll along the floor, pressure plates spit
poison darts, and missiles sweep the whole level. Everything is telegraphed. Everything
can be dodged. How far down you get is entirely on you.
Eight identical doors on every floor and only your memory tells them apart.
