Developed by over a hundred dedicated scholars, the NIV Bible is a completely original translation utilizing the best available Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts. It all started with Howard Long, an engineer and devotee of the King James Version who had a vision to create a Bible translation that truly resonated with his contemporaries.

For over a decade, Long's passion was shared and embraced by a growing group of supporters, including an international and trans-denominational assembly of scholars who began the project in 1965. They were determined to start from scratch and create a translation that provided the best possible blend of transparency to the original documents and comprehension of the original meaning in every verse.

Sponsored by the New York Bible Society (later Biblica), fifteen biblical scholars formed the Committee on Bible Translation (CBT) and were charged with the responsibility of overseeing the translation. Each book was assigned to translation teams, consisting of lead translators, translation consultants, and stylistic consultants. The outcome of their diligent work was scrutinized and revised by multiple committees and tested by a diverse audience for clarity and ease of reading.
