1001 memorial
Walls, stories, faces
Discover monuments near you and all over Germany! Let yourself be surprised which faces and stories are hidden behind it!
Over a thousand monuments - one app. The Federation of Homeland and Environment in Germany (BHU) is presenting the “1001 Monument” app sponsored by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.
It presents monuments from all over Germany that are of particular national importance and that have been funded by the federal government. In addition to the importance of monuments for the German and pan-European cultural landscape, attention is drawn to the indispensable social commitment of full-time and voluntary actors.
The spectrum of the monuments shown in the memorial app ranges from stately sacred buildings, historical palaces and castles to gardens and parks, exciting testimonies of everyday culture to monuments of industrial and technological history and archaeological excavations. The focus is not only on old “walls”, but above all on the people who make an effort to ensure that these sites of our common cultural heritage are preserved. The monument app contains numerous interviews with committed people who are committed to the preservation of a monument and report on their motivation, challenges and successes. The actors tell stories about the natural and cultural heritage of their home region.
For visitors
For those interested and visitors, the monument app offers interactive tours to around 1,000 monuments. These include well-known sights such as the Berlin Cathedral and the Zollverein colliery, but also gems such as the Zinzendorf Castle in Saxony or the Paradies water art facility in Baden-Baden.
Individual locations can be selected from an overview of the federal states or on a map. The map section can be freely selected or adapted to your own location. Various filters can be set to limit the selection of the displayed locations. A distinction is made between seven different categories of monuments. In addition, the monuments can be filtered according to the topics of the “cultural monument of the year”. These include, for example, train stations, hydraulic structures or mills and hammers.
The tours contain interesting facts about the monuments and those involved on site. For the monuments, there are descriptions of the special features, historical and current images and, for selected monuments, videos, audio contributions, drone recordings and 360-degree views. The tours can be called up on the go or saved in advance on a mobile device so that they can be used on site even without internet access.
For actors
For associations and initiatives in the field of monument preservation, preservation and mediation, the monument app provides the opportunity to make their own commitment visible (more). Actors can have personal access to the memorial app and add their own information, images and videos. The monument app can also be used to conduct live audio tours. In addition, the monument app is intended to invite people to exchange knowledge and experience and to network with one another.
In addition to the monument app, the website www.1001denkmal.de will be set up with further background information and extensive video material on selected monuments.
