About this app

The International Safety Management Code in one app, built from the Code itself and from the ICS Guidelines on the Application of the ISM Code, for candidates preparing for oral examinations and for anyone who runs a safety management system on board. Everything works offline; nothing leaves the phone.

READ THE CODE
All 16 sections of Part A and Part B, verbatim, presented as the front sheet of a ship's Safety Management Manual. Every clause carries a one-line summary and the lowest rank expected to know it, from cadet to Master. The certificate forms (DOC, SMC and the interim certificates) are transcribed in full, and a short note explains how SOLAS chapter IX makes the Code mandatory.

KNOWLEDGE BASE
20 topics written to be read rather than recited, paraphrased from the ICS Guidelines and the shipboard evidence documents: origins and objectives, definitions and legal status, stakeholders, policy and commitment, the Company and the shore organisation, the Designated Person Ashore, the Master's responsibility and overriding authority, personnel and familiarisation, risk assessment and permits to work, shipboard operations, emergency preparedness, non-conformity reporting, maintenance and critical equipment, document control, audits and reviews, certification, the evidence that an SMS is working and the signs that it is struggling, data and learning, and leadership and safety culture. Each topic is tagged by rank and ends with what the examiner asks at each rank.

ORAL PRACTICE
228 questions in four ranks (cadet and rating, Officer of the Watch, Chief Mate, Master), each answered in the three parts examiners listen for: the requirement with its clause, what it looks like on board, and the evidence that it is working. Practise in shuffled sessions, reveal the model answer and mark yourself; the ones you were not happy with come back as a list to rehearse. 20 scenarios test what you would actually do, and 95 quick-fire pairs sharpen the numbers and definitions.

AUDIT DRILL
58 things candidates say in the oral that are wrong, grouped by theme. Read the wrong version, say what is wrong with it, then check.

SEARCH AND CURRENCY
Search the Code, the topics, every question, the misconceptions and the certificate forms. A currency page records the amendment history in the sources and lists plainly what the app does not cover, so you know where to look elsewhere.
