About this app

GTV Gamepad turns the phone already in your hand into a controller for your Android TV. There is nothing to install on the television, no dongle, and no account to create.

TWO WAYS TO CONNECT

Bluetooth - the full controller
Your phone presents itself to the TV as an ordinary Bluetooth gamepad, using the same HID profile a physical controller uses. Games read it through Android's normal controller APIs, so both analog sticks, both triggers and every button arrive as real gamepad input. Nothing is installed on the TV.

Wi-Fi - works on any Android TV
Connects to the remote service your television already runs, over your own network. This path carries key events rather than analog input, so you get the d-pad, the face buttons and the TV keys, but no analog sticks or triggers. Use it when a set refuses a Bluetooth controller.

THE CONTROLS
- Two analog thumbsticks, each clickable
- D-pad with true diagonals
- A, B, X, Y
- L1, L2, R1, R2
- Start and Select
- Back, Home and OK, so you can leave a game and reach the launcher
- Volume and mute on the remote layout

TWO LAYOUTS, TEN DESIGNS
Switch between a console pad and a TV remote at any time. The console pad carries the full control set. The remote is a d-pad, one stick, OK, Back, Home and volume - fewer controls, all of them TV keys. Ten colour designs are included, and every one of them is available from the start.

MAKE IT FIT YOUR HANDS
- Drag any control to move it, and it stays where you put it
- Make the whole pad bigger or smaller
- Point any button at a different TV action
- Haptic feedback on or off
- Your layout survives a rotation, a restart and a new phone screen size

WORKS WITH
- Android TV and Google TV
- Chromecast with Google TV, Nvidia Shield and Android TV boxes and sticks
- Requires Android 9 or newer on the phone, because the Bluetooth controller role does not exist before it

WHAT IT CANNOT DO
Some televisions accept a phone as a Bluetooth controller and then drop the link a few seconds later. That is the set's own Bluetooth stack refusing the profile, and no app on the phone can change it. When it happens the app explains what has occurred and offers the Wi-Fi connection instead, which uses no Bluetooth at all. Televisions that do not run Android, including most Samsung and LG sets, are not supported by either connection.

PERMISSIONS, AND WHY
- Nearby devices (Bluetooth) - to appear as a controller and to find your TV. On Android 11 and below the system requires location permission for Bluetooth scanning; it is never used to determine where you are.
- Notifications - to show the connection while you play. Decline it and the controller still works.

PRIVACY
The controller talks to your television directly, over Bluetooth or your own Wi-Fi. Your input is not routed through a server. The app shows ads and uses Google Analytics for Firebase, which is what the privacy policy and the Data safety section describe; you can change your advertising choices from Settings at any time.
