WAY better than Duolingo. I'm making real progress. I wish I'd done this years ago and just paid for it. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. High quality content, good progression, actual explanations, stories, podcasts. I am PAYING for this and it's exceeding my expectations and way cheaper than a CC class or something. I can't recommend it enough, just buy the premium plan as a beginner and do it 3 months, then upgrade when you need premium plus content to progress. Absolutely amazing app!

I spent over a year a duolingo, and did okay, but it got very frustrating. They started putting in chinese characters, which I hadn't studied so it got very frustrating! helloChinese has the same fun feel as duolingo but it has the ability to turn on and off Pinyan. The ability to get help on any word or sentence is great. The cultural context of the teacher chats is quite helpful too. After three days I just read a comic book page completely in chinese characters! Just try it!

Just the right tool for me. I just want to understand basic Chinese without extensive practice drawing Hanzi. Note that I can read some Kanji so I'm not starting from scratch. I tried Chinese on Duolingo and it immediately started making me do long practices of drawing Hanzi. That turned me off fast. Not useful to me at all. Hello Chinese shows you characters AND pinyin so you can build the recognition and learn vocabulary and structure faster. Lessons are shorter and fun with lots of videos.
