I love the capabilities of this app and would give it five stars based on what it should be able to do. Downloading brand new soundtracks is great. But there are two problems. One is that it crashes all of the time. This seems to be when I go out of a coverage area, even if I have the album downloaded. The other major missing feature is Android Auto compatibility. Each of those would earn a star and make this a Five Start app.
Hoopla has a great selection of content of all kinds. I mainly use it for audiobooks and I'm happy with all the options. This app however, and the features it has for audiobooks make using it a disappointment. The app doesn't respond to play/pause clicks on any of my headsets. When playing audiobooks this is essential. It should pause playback when you hit the headset button and when you resume, it should be able to recap a preset number of seconds or at least to the last silence detected. Another big issue is that it doesn't remember playback speed separately for each book, and when the speed is on anything other than 1x, voices are distorted, not enough to make listening impossible, but enough to be a distraction while listening.
I mostly use Hoopla for audiobooks. I enjoy the variety of titles available but am stumped why, no matter how long the book, there are no section or chapter breakdowns. Atlas Shrugged is 55 hours all without a single natural break included. My answer was to add a bookmark every 30 minutes or so and delete the old ones. The bookmarking is extremely basic, allowing only a time stamp. The app has other issues too. If I pause it, any notification on my phone will restart it. Other times, it won't restart after I hit pause. This is one time the bookmarks sometimes helped me get back on track. I love being able to check out library items this way, and will love it more with improvements.
I love being able to listen to books while I do other things. There's a really good selecting of books to choose from, in a lot of categories. However, I am often frustrated by the book stopping, usually when I skip back to hear something I have missed, but sometimes just randomly. It can usually be fixed by exiting hoopla and the going back into it. Right now, my book hasn't worked for several days. I would also love it if we could put other family member's cards on Hoopla and could switch from person to person. Some months, I can't listen to any books because we use up our selections on the kids, even though they have their own library cards.
I usually use hoopla on our desktop and mostly for audio books for the kids. I think that they have a good amount of media to choose from. Movies, not so much, but I use mostly for books any way. Even though there is an app for everything now, I wasn't aware that hoopla had one and I was pleasantly surprised to see there was one. I enjoy it and it's easy to use. But be aware that you can only check out 15 items per month. I learned the hard way.
I love audiobooks, and hoopla is great for being able to borrow a book for a month, and the selection seems pretty big. I'm not as crazy about the narrators compared to my options on a similar paid app, but that's not worthy of losing a star. I take two stars however, for not being able to divide the book into chapters. I primarily listen to books that I own physical copies of as well, and like to go back and highlight in the physical book. But it takes a long time to figure out how far you are because there are no chapter markings at all in Hoopla. I hope this will change someday, and then hoopla will easily join other audio book apps at the top of everyone's list!
We fixed some bugs in the eReader.
We added the ability to rate titles within the app. Now you can give Birdemic 2 that 5 star review!
On a serious note, we added a dyslexic font to our ebooks.
