Instapaper as a service is wonderful, but this application is very buggy. The application has problems predicting length when using pagination, and cropping content if it's to large. More critically, the update mechanism is very unreliable. Some articles suddenly show up again after being moved/archived/deleted, and occasionally requesting an update will start and hang indefinitely. If the app crashes in this hung state, or the user closes the app from this hung state it will crash. After such a crash the user must forcibly uninstall and reinstall the application in order to get it to launch again.
I love instapaper and I was an original backer years ago. However the current iteration crashes consistently on my Motorola X pure Edition Android marshmallow. I really need it back over pocket because if it's Kindle functionality which I use daily. Please update.
The design is too plain and simpleminded. There is no tagging or categorization. Instapaper ignores the tagging of articles imported from Pocket. You can only share one highlight at a time. You cannot share an article with all the highlights included. You cannot add notes anywhere you want in an article. Users should be able to share an Instapaper version of the article with the highlights. Users should have the option to include notes. The original URL should be in the version shared. The share feature implemented is no more useful than if the user shared from the browser.
As someone who moved over from Pocket, this is definitely a lot better. A nice and elegant interface, turns almost all articles into a simple, magazine-like layout, absolutely no problem with offline viewing or when my connection is affected by signal loss (unlike Pocket which always erases saved articles and attempts to download newer versions when it detects my data is switched on), I can't imagine switching to another app. I took one star off because there should be a clearer indicator for which articles haven't finished downloading yet. Quite often I'd walk out of the house and find that an article isn't ready to be opened yet even though I already refreshed my article list. Also, when scrolling back up within an article, it would be good if the top menu automatically reappears like in many modern apps these days, instead of having to tap the screen.
I really like instapaper, it's a central tool for me, and I'm a pro subscriber. The app looks lovely, and mostly behaves well. However, there are ongoing bugs, eg white screen issue roughly 10% of the time; can't create folders in the app (plus button doesn't work). Also articles are often stuck on 'downloading' for too long. LATEST VERSION: highlighting is broken. Come on, this app is way too buggy.
I used to love Instapaper, but it's been clear for some time now that Android is on the back-burner when it comes to development, if it's on the list anywhere at all. It got frustrating when about every other article I tried to tap on would load with a blank page — now, on my tablet, we've just gone the route of every single article telling me the page is unavailable in reading mode, and would I like to open it in the browser? Yes, I will, thanks. And I don't need Instapaper for that. Even the free premium service isn't worth it - now, if you have the app, switch to another app and switch back, it crashes. Stick with Pocket.
