Learn Japanese from zero to JLPT N1 with a method built around one rule: you produce the answer instead of picking it from a list. Tanuki takes a complete beginner through hiragana and katakana, then up the JLPT ladder from N5 to N1. Reviews are timed so the Japanese you learn actually stays.
START WITH KANA, NOT ROMAJI
Written Japanese begins with two syllabaries. Tanuki teaches hiragana and katakana first, tracing each character in the correct stroke order until your hand knows it without thinking. Romaji appears only during this first phase. Once the kana are yours, every screen looks the way Japanese really looks: kana and kanji, with furigana above any kanji you have not learned yet.

Multiple choice appears once, on first exposure. After that you type the answer on a Japanese keyboard, or trace the kanji. It is harder than tapping a choice, and that is the point: recognition fades fast, and production is what survives.
READING PRACTICE FROM WEEK ONE
Graded reading passages are built only from words and grammar you already know, and you can tap any word to look it up, so you read whole Japanese sentences early and keep reading as your vocabulary grows. Reading is where the words you have studied turn into Japanese you understand.

What’s new
Every kanji reading now has audio: tap one on a kanji card to hear it. Discover has thirteen new graded stories, N4 to N1, in all ten languages. The month calendar in Progress now shows every date and what each mark means. Japanese words inside explanations stand out the same way everywhere, and never break mid-word.
