Has the sound ever cut out in the middle of the night — or an ad blared
out and woken you?
Everhush was built so neither happens.
■ No ads that wake you up
There are no full-screen ads in this app. Changing a sound never
interrupts you with one. No ad makes a sound.
There is one small banner at the very bottom of the screen. It is silent,
it never interrupts playback, and it is not visible once you lock the phone.
The only other ad is one you tap yourself to open the locked sounds.
If you don't tap it, it never appears. Nothing pops up while you are asleep.
■ It does not stop overnight
The most common complaint about white noise apps is "it turned off while
we were asleep." The phone enters battery saving and stops the audio.
This app is built to keep playing through that. We tested it with battery
optimization left on and the charger unplugged: 11 hours without a single
interruption.
It keeps going through phone calls, with the screen off, while you use
other apps. For phones that still stop it, the settings screen has a
one-time fix with step-by-step instructions showing exactly what to tap.
■ 54 sounds, mix up to 4
Rain · Water · Nature · White Noise · Places · Home · Music Box ·
Instruments · In the Womb
Light rain, heavy rain, ocean waves, a stream, a waterfall, a campfire,
crickets, distant thunder, falling snow, a fan, an air conditioner, a
washing machine, the inside of a moving car, a train, a plane, a cafe, a
quiet room, the city at night, typing, white/pink/brown noise, piano,
music box.
Play several at once and mix them, with a separate volume for each.
Add a campfire under the rain, or birds over a stream.
Your mix is remembered, so you never have to set it up again.
■ For falling asleep, and for focus
White noise does not make a room quiet — it covers other sounds.
So people use it on nights when sleep will not come, and with a cafe or
typing bed underneath when they want to concentrate. Some use it to cover
ringing in their ears.
This app does not treat anything. It plays sounds.
■ For settling a baby — check the level is safe
No other white noise app does this.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping infant sound
machines below 50 dB at the crib, and at least 2 m away from it. A 2014
study in Pediatrics tested 14 infant sound machines sold at the time.
All 14 exceeded that limit.
This app includes a sound level meter. Put your phone where the baby
sleeps and it tells you whether the current level is safe.
Switch it to the grown-up setting and it measures against the World
Health Organization's night-noise guideline instead. One tap at the top
of the screen.
■ Timer
From 15 minutes to 8 hours. When the time is up it fades out over
30 seconds, because a sudden stop wakes you.
■ Made for the dark
A dark night-sky screen, large buttons, everything within one-handed
reach. Each sound has its own color so you can find it half awake.
Press and hold a sound to keep it at the top.
■ What it costs
12 sounds are always open. No account, no sign-in.
The other 42 open for 6 hours after one short ad you tap yourself.
■ Where the sounds came from
The 44 recordings were released under CC0 (free to use) by people around
the world. We cleaned them up and credit every one of them inside the app.
The rest we created ourselves.
Every sound is matched to the same perceived loudness, so you never have
to reach for the volume when you switch.
