About this app

Is the beach nice today? Introducing Costa: Coastal Intelligence for Puerto Rico's beaches.

Costa analyzes the conditions of Puerto Rico's beaches in real time and gives you a number: the Costa Score. No charts, no technical jargon. Just what you need to decide.

THE DATA IS ALREADY THERE. COSTA TRANSLATES IT FOR YOU.
Buoys, satellites, and water samples measure Puerto Rico's beaches around the clock. But much of that information is stored in charts designed for meteorologists, not for you. Costa reads it, interprets it, and turns it into a single number that's easy to understand at a glance.

THE COSTA SCORE
Each beach has a number from 1 to 100. It cross-references ten live signals (waves, currents, wind, weather, water quality, sargassum, Saharan dust, UV, water temperature, and tide), each weighted according to its importance for a beach day, to tell you how nice the beach is right now. Tap the number and see exactly where each component comes from.

A real danger never gets lost in the average. If there's a strong current, lightning nearby, or a water quality advisory, the number drops to "Dangerous" no matter how beautiful the rest of the day is. Safety comes first, always.

REAL DATA, NEVER MADE UP
If a reading is missing, Costa hides it instead of guessing. A number is never a bluff. Water quality samples expire after 30 days. Sargassum is a regional and weekly forecast, not a snapshot of each beach. Every reading states when it was taken.

MADE FOR PUERTO RICO
56 beaches, from coast to coast, and we're adding more. Spanish first, with English available whenever you want. Your nearest coast, first. Compare beaches at a glance and choose where you're going today.

Sources: NWS San Juan, NOAA (NDBC buoys, CO-OPS tides, CoastWatch satellite), CARICOOS, JCA and Surfrider, EPA, Copernicus CAMS, and OpenMeteo.

Costa does not replace the judgment of a lifeguard or an official advisory. If there is a flag or warning on the beach, follow it.
